What is a Pressure Transmitter?

A transmitter is a device that converts a reading from a sensor or transducer into a standard signal and transmits that signal to a monitor or controller. Transmitter types include: Differential transmitters, Flow transmitters, Temperature transmitters, and Level transmitters

Pressure transducers are an advanced form of pressure sensor element. The simplest form of an electrical pressure measurement system is the pressure sensor. It is the pressure sensor which changes the physical variable “pressure” into a quantity that can be processed electrically. A pressure transducer is the next level of sophistication. In a pressure transducer, the sensor element and housing are in electrical contact and have a pressure connection.

Typical output signals from pressure transducers are between 10 mV and around 100 mV, depending on the sensor type. These signals are not standardized, however, nor are they compensated. With thin-film type pressure transducers it is customary for just the sensor element to be welded to the pressure connection and then bonded electrically. Piezoresistive pressure transducers, on the other hand, require far more production steps since the semiconductor sensor element has to be protected from the effects of various media by a chemical seal.

What are The Different Types of Pressure Transducers?
 

Through advancement in sensor technology which brings the industry from the mechanical age to the electronic age, several types of sensor technology developed throughout the years. They are Piezoresistive Sensor, Ceramic Thick Film Sensor, and Metal Thin Film Sensor.

Resistive pressure measurement (ceramic thick-film and metal thin-film technology)
In ceramic thick-film and metal thin-film technology, four resistors are interconnected to create a Wheatstone bridge. During pressurization, the resistors are exposed to the highest strain in the diaphragm center while the strongest compression is found in the edge areas. In ceramic and thin-film cells, the measuring membrane acts at the same time as media separating membrane. No internal transmission fluid is required.

Piezo-resistive pressure measurement (silicon semiconductors)
In semiconductor materials, the change in the specific resistance and thus of the signal results from the variable mobility of the electrons in the crystalline structure. This mobility reacts to mechanical load. The sensitive silicon chip and the process medium are separated by a stainless steel membrane (encapsulation). Depending on the application, paraffin or silicone oil is used as transmission fluid for internal pressure transmission.
